PROGRAMME SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION OBSERVATORY IN ARGENTINA


Diagnosis of the current situation

On an international level, from Johannesburg World Summit (2002) it urge to change the unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. To achieve this, it calls out all the countries to action, to encourage and promote the development of frame programmes with 10 years horizon, to support the national and regional initiatives on sustainable consumption and production. In response to the need to accomplish this mandate, the so-called Marrakech Process was initiated, where every region of the planet started their own processes of identification and definition of priorities in order to include them in their respective frame programmes.

In this whole process the information and media diversity have a central role in the objective of changing patterns of consumption and production. The products and services of all the Earth regions are announced and promoted constantly, which has influenced patterns of consumption of millions of consumers in developing countries.

At the same time, and given that consumption is considered an indicator of the offer, it has a strong influence over production patterns. In this way, productive sectors develop products and services that seek to satisfy the needs and requirements of consumers. Because of this, any change towards patterns of sustainable consumption will generate a turn towards patterns of sustainable production.

Currently, the universe of consumption and production is unknown in critic indispensable aspects so much for a follow up as for the development of politics that attend in a focus and efficient way present and future needs and requirements to advance towards a sustainable development. In this sense, having a MAP of sustainable consumption and production will allow national, provincial and municipal governments, cameras and association of entrepreneurs, universities, technical institutes and civil society organizations of a country, to see an increment in the availability of information consistent with the topic. These organizations will count with a continuous flow of information and with the possibility to do specific approximations from which to orientate actions and design and manage politics.

Objective

Generate useful statistical information on sustainable consumption and production to facilitate the formulation of politics, programmes, tools and execution of actions more efficient that ease the change towards sustainable patterns of consumption and production.


Specific Objectives

• A perfect methodology that allows to systematize, analyze and manage information on sustainable production and consumption. 
  
  
• Elaborate study base for the generation of politics, programmes and tools of sustainable consumption and production.
  
  
• Provide governments and society all the updated information about sustainable consumption and production that allows decision making towards changes in consuming and production patterns.
  
  
• To achieve this, indicators will be established and monitored to allow the follow-up and evaluation of tendencies in the consumption and production patterns, which are basic tools for decision making.
